Free preview lessons
Every course lets you read at least one lesson before paying: Preview on its card, or Preview lesson on its page.
Every published course has at least one lesson marked as a free preview, which anyone can read without enrolling or an account. Open it from Preview on the course's card or Preview lesson in the curriculum on its page. Try the first lesson free, under the buy box, opens it too.
How it works
The lesson opens in the course's workspace, which lists its preview lessons and nothing else. You see the whole lesson: its text, video, code and files. The creator chooses which lessons preview, and a course cannot be published without one.
A bar along the bottom has Add to bag, or Enroll free on a free course, and Back to course. The course's Overview and other lessons say "You don't have access to this course", or "Sign in to open this course" when you are signed out, whose Sign in brings you back to the same page. Its Chat asks you to sign in first.
What you can do in a preview
- Read and watch everything in the lesson.
- Try a quiz and see your score. The score is not kept.
- Voting in a poll, handing in an assignment, answering a discussion and reading a thread are for enrolled students.
- Signed out, selecting text offers Copy only: notes, highlights, corrections and the Assistant need an account.
- Nothing you do in a preview counts toward the course: no progress, no XP and no certificate.
Rules and limits
- Only the lessons the creator marked are open. The others stay locked until you enrol.
- A link to a preview lesson opens it for anyone, with or without an account.
- Once you enrol, open the lesson again to mark it done: nothing carries over from the preview.
If something goes wrong
- "You must be enrolled in this course to vote."
- Polls count enrolled students only. Enrol to take part.
- "You must be enrolled in this course to submit an assignment"
- Assignments are for enrolled students.
- "You must be enrolled in this course to respond"
- Discussions are for enrolled students.
