Rooms and chat

Course rooms, group rooms, channels, threads, roles and moderation.

Rooms6

The Social page

Your group rooms, course rooms and direct messages in one list, with recent social notifications, your network and suggested people.

Course rooms

Every published course has a room you join on enrolling; it takes no invitations and stays, with its messages, after the course closes.

Creating a group room

Choose Group on the Social page to make a room you own, then name it, add a photo and invite people.

Channels and categories

Up to 10 live channels and 10 categories per room, of the Standard, Forum or Announcement type, run and archived by people with Manage Channels.

Forum channels

Questions as cards with their own replies; the person who asked, or a moderator, marks the reply that answered it.

Announcement channels

In course rooms only, the people who run the course post news that notifies students in the app and by email.

Messages4

Threads

Side conversations under a channel, open to everyone or only to the people who run the room, kept until someone deletes them.

Messages

Send text and one file of up to 25 MB, react, mention, reply, edit or delete your own, and search the whole room.

Auto-delete and Save in chat

A channel can delete messages from 1 hour to 30 days after they are sent; Save in chat keeps a message for everyone.

Read receipts and typing indicators

An eye shows how many have seen your message, a line shows who is typing, and you can turn read receipts off.

Running a room5

Roles and permissions

Owner, admin, mod, member and restricted, plus custom roles; each permission is set per role, for the room or one channel.

Restricted members

Restricted members can read a room but not post, react or start threads, unless a channel allows them.

Invites

Share a group room's link or invite people by name; course rooms take no invitations, and banned people cannot join.

Moderating a room

Mute, remove or ban members and remove messages; none of it touches a course enrolment, and nobody acts on a higher rank.

Room settings

Room Settings, from the gear, has Overview, Channels, Roles & Permissions and My Permissions, for moderators and above.
