One page of notes kept in your account, beside whatever you read, with the passages you save from lessons under Highlights & Quotes.

Header → Quick tools → Notebook (Ctrl+Alt+N)

The Notebook is a page of notes kept in your account, open beside whatever you are reading. Open it from Quick tools in the header, or press Ctrl+Alt+N. On a phone, open Menu, then Tools. The panel also holds Highlights & Quotes: the passages you have saved from lessons.

What's on it

The page
One page of notes. The toolbar has the usual formatting: bold and italic, a heading and a subheading, lists and alignment.
Show line numbers, Show ruled lines
Number the lines, or rule the page like paper. Your choice is kept in your account.
Copy all notes
Copies the whole page, to paste somewhere else.
Highlights & Quotes
Each passage you saved, newest first, with the module and lesson it came from and when you saved it.
Shrink, Recentre, Expand, Close
The bar at the foot of the screen while the Notebook is open. See Moving and closing tool panels.

How to save a passage from a lesson

  1. 1.

Select the text in the lesson.

  2. 2.

Choose Add Note in the bar that appears over it.

  3. 3.

Find it under Highlights & Quotes. Choose the module and lesson under it to jump back to the passage, Copy quote to copy its text, or Delete to remove it.

A passage you highlight in colour is listed there too. Add to Notebook on a module's key terms adds each term, with its definition, as an entry of its own. Terms already in your Notebook are not added again.

Rules and limits

  • Your notes save 1 second after you stop typing, and when you close the panel. The corner of the page says where they stand: Unsaved, Saving... or Saved.
  • The Notebook is private. Nobody else can read it, the creator of a course included.
  • Notes stay yours if you leave a course, and they are in your data export.
  • Your first saved entry earns the Note Taker achievement. Taking notes 3, 7 and 30 days in a row earns more. See Achievements.

If something goes wrong

"Not saved. Check your connection"
The last save did not reach us. Keep the panel open and type a character: it tries again 1 second later.
"Sign in to save your notes"
You are signed out, so there is no account to save to. Sign in and open the Notebook again.
"No highlights yet"
You have not saved a passage. Select text in a lesson and choose Add Note.
