Roles and permissions
Owner, admin, mod, member and restricted, plus custom roles; each permission is set per role, for the room or one channel.
Everyone in a room has a role, and a role decides what they can do. The five built-in roles rank from owner down to restricted. A role can do anything a lower one can, and nobody can act on someone ranked at or above them.
The roles
| Role | What it can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Everything, including deleting the room and handing it to someone else with Make Owner. |
| Admin | Every permission, and adding, renaming and editing roles below admin. |
| Mod | By default: remove messages, remove and mute members, manage channels and threads, pin messages, change the room's look, and replace an invite link that still works. Not banning, and not managing roles. |
| Member | Post, react, start threads and invite people. |
| Restricted | Read only, unless a channel says otherwise. |
Custom roles
Admins and the owner add custom roles with Create Role. Each has a level, which is its rank: Restricted level, Member level, Moderator level or Admin level. You can only choose a level below your own. An admin goes up to Moderator level, and only the owner can make an Admin-level role, which holds every permission. Change a role's level later under Rank on the role; everyone holding it moves with it.
Someone can hold more than one role: their rank is the highest, and their permissions are all of them together.
What you can change
In Room Settings → Roles & Permissions, turn each permission on or off per role, for the whole room or for one channel. My Permissions shows what your own roles allow. Room Settings opens from the gear.
Rules and limits
- The room permissions are Invite Users, Delete Messages, Kick Users, Ban Users, Manage Channels, Manage Room, Manage Roles and Post in Announcements. Course rooms have no Invite Users.
- Channel permissions for taking part are View Channel, Send Messages, Send Attachments, Add Reactions and Create Threads.
- Channel permissions for running a channel are Manage Threads, Pin Messages, See Staff Threads, Manage Messages and Mention Everyone.
- Manage Roles lets someone give roles below their own. Ban Users and Mention Everyone are off by default below admin.
- Nobody can rename, recolour, re-rank, delete or hand out a role at or above their own rank. A role name is up to 40 characters and cannot be a built-in role's name.
- Admins cannot edit the Admin role, act on other admins, delete the room or hand it over.
If something goes wrong
- "You can only create a role ranked below your own."
- Pick a lower level.
- "You cannot change a role at or above your own rank."
- Ask someone ranked higher.
- "A role with this name already exists." or "That name belongs to a built-in role. Pick another."
- Choose another name.
- "You cannot grant a role at or above your own."
- Ask someone ranked higher.
- "You cannot change the roles of someone ranked at or above you."
- Their rank is equal to or above yours.
