Announcement channels
In course rooms only, the people who run the course post news that notifies students in the app and by email.
An announcement channel is for news from the people who run a course, and only course rooms have one. Each post notifies the course's students in the app and by email. Students cannot post in the channel, but they can reply in a thread under a post.
How it works
- The owner and admins post, and so does any role given Post in Announcements.
- A post notifies every enrolled student who has not left the course. Students who have Course Announcements on in Email preferences also get it by email.
- After posting you see how many students were told, for example Announcement posted. 12 students were notified.
- Under each announcement, its poster sees how many have read it.
What you can change
As a student, turn the emails off in Settings → Email preferences → Course Announcements. Turn the in-app notices off in Settings → Notifications → Course Updates.
Rules and limits
- A post that is only an attachment, with no text, notifies nobody.
- Replies to an announcement go in a thread under it, not in the channel. A thread of its own, with no announcement above it, is only for those who can post there.
- A reply in that thread notifies the person who posted the announcement and everyone who has replied there.
- When a course closes, its room's announcement channel stops notifying anyone.
If something goes wrong
- "You don't have permission to send messages in this channel."
- Only the people who run the course post here. Reply in a thread instead.
- "Could not post that announcement."
- Nothing was posted. Try again.
