Threads
Side conversations under a channel, open to everyone or only to the people who run the room, kept until someone deletes them.
A thread is a side conversation under a channel, so a long discussion does not bury everything else. Start one from a channel, or from any message with Reply in a thread. A channel's threads are listed under it in the room's sidebar.
How to start a thread
- 1.
Point at a channel in the room's sidebar and choose its + (Create thread).
- 2.
Give it a Thread Title, and an Opening Message if you like.
- 3.
Choose Who can see it: everyone in the channel, you and the people who run the room, or only them.
- 4.
Create it. The thread opens beside the channel, in a course's Chat as well as on a room's own page.
Who is notified
A reply in a thread notifies the person who started it and everyone who has posted in it. A thread started on a message also notifies the message's writer. The person replying is never notified. Choosing the notification opens the thread.
- You keep one unread notification per thread. A new reply updates it, and once you have read it the next reply sends a new one.
- An @mention in a thread notifies that member as a mention instead. In a thread, @everyone works as it does in a channel, for roles allowed to use it.
- Only people who can still see the thread are notified. A reply in a private thread reaches only the person who started it and the people who run the room.
- Nobody is notified who muted the room, is muted or banned in it, has blocked the person replying, or is blocked by them.
- A reply in a thread under an announcement notifies the same people as any other thread.
- Turn these off in Settings → Notifications → Thread Replies.
Rules and limits
- Starting a thread takes Create Threads, and replying takes Send Messages.
- A reply notifies at most the 100 people who posted in the thread most recently. The person who started it and the writer of the message it began on are always included.
- The person who started a thread can rename or delete it, and so can anyone with Manage Threads. Deleting removes every reply.
- A thread private to the people who run the room is how a student asks staff something without the class seeing.
- Threads stay until someone deletes them. In an archived channel they stay readable, and nobody can start, rename or reply to one.
If something goes wrong
- "Thread title is required"
- Give the thread a title.
- "You don't have permission to create threads in this channel"
- Create Threads is off for your role here.
- "The thread was not created. Try again."
- Nothing was made. Try again.
- "This thread is not available to you…"
- It is private to other people, or it was deleted.
