Lessons and progress
Mark a lesson complete when you finish it; progress counts completed lessons, weighted by their estimated time.
A lesson is a page of blocks. Read it, do what it asks, and choose Mark as complete at the foot of it. Your progress is the lessons you have marked complete, weighted by how long each is expected to take.
How it works
- A lesson with a required assignment, discussion or quiz shows Complete the required block above to finish this lesson until you have done it. A required quiz has to be passed at its mark, not only sat.
- Finishing the last required block marks the lesson complete for you.
- Choose Completed to un-mark a lesson, or use the tick beside it in the sidebar.
- The arrows either side of the button go to the previous and next lessons.
- When the last lesson is complete you go to the course-complete page. See Finishing a course.
An example
A module has 4 lessons, of 10, 10, 10 and 30 minutes. Finish the first three and it reads "3 / 4 lessons (50%)": 30 of its 60 minutes are done.
How time is estimated
A lesson's time comes from what is in it. Text counts at about 150 characters a minute and code at 100. A video counts its own length, or 5 minutes if that cannot be read, and an assignment 30 minutes unless the creator set a time. Every lesson counts at least 1 minute.
Locked lessons and locked parts
A creator can make a lesson wait for other work: lessons, whole modules, a quiz passed at its mark, or an assignment handed in. Until then the lesson opens on This lesson opens once you have finished a few things. It lists what is done, with a link to each thing still to do. Reopen the lesson once you have finished one, and it checks again.
A single block can wait the same way while the rest of the lesson reads normally. A locked required block does not hold the lesson shut while you cannot reach it. A module counts as finished when every published lesson in it is complete.
If something goes wrong
When a lesson cannot be marked, the reason shows under the button, or under the lesson in the sidebar.
- "Finish what this lesson requires first."
- The lesson is waiting for other work. Open it to see the list.
- "Finish the required activities in this lesson first."
- A required block in the lesson is not done yet.
- "This lesson has not been released yet."
- The creator has not published it.
- "You no longer have access to this course."
- Your access has ended. See Billing & Subscription.
